You’re tougher than you think!

You are modest about your abilities. You may be in the beginning of your journey or you haven’t had the opportunity to feel success on the mats but your growth is imminent as long as you keep at it. Mental toughness is a skill as much as it is a trait and will be developed the more you commit to doing hard things, like training jiu jitsu.

Being mentally tough can be improved with commitment to a goal and proper use of resources to achieve them. There’s a reason you started training jiu jitsu so let’s start believing that you have the potential to be competent!

 
 

What is mental toughness anyway?

To be mentally tough means to perform at your best in any situation, especially when encountering adversity and obstacles. It looks like maintaining enthusiasm despite a loss or remaining optimistic despite having a tough day in training. It is the essential component to performing under pressure—something jiu jitsu athletes know all about.

One framework to describe mental toughness is the 4C’s model by Clough & Strycharczyk (2012). See the breakdown below:

  • Commitment is your why and the driving force behind achieving your goals. Mental toughness requires you to be persistent and committed to the process. Remember the reason you started training and why you compete. This will help you dig deep when you need that extra push.

  • Control is the degree to which you believe you have influence over your life. It is the ability to narrow in on what can be controlled like our own thoughts and actions rather than on what cannot be controlled like the thoughts and actions of others. This includes regulating your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors appropriately.

  • Confidence is your belief in yourself, your abilities, and the capacity to do hard things. It is the unshaken belief that things will turn out well and you will be okay. Self belief comes from a history of doing hard things and overcoming challenges in the past. It looks like a type of composure that no matter what comes your way, you can handle it.

  • Challenge is seeing adversity as an opportunity for growth and development. It is the ability to face your fears, embrace change, and take on risk. When something is challenging, it is highlighting an area for self-improvement and testing your abilities.
